Sydney Water approached Wrought Artworks in 2001 to reproduce this Gothic style gate. Using one of the originals gates that line the circular plan of the Reservoir as a pattern, a duplicate was created.
In an incredible cast iron pour we successfully recreated a new 'old' gate. A foundry crew of four pairs were required for this complicated pour, as well as a crew to charge the furnace. The complexity of the mold required four molten iron inlets, the molten metal fusing on contact.
The pour was three times larger than any previous pour using the maximum capacity of two furnaces. This project won Wrought Artworks a commendation in the Energy Australia, National Trust Heritage Awards. Simultanously Wrought Artworks also reproduced some sections of the highly detailed railings around the parameter of the reservoir.
A documentary titled 'Baking a Gate' by Julia Boros was screened on the ABC. |
