Sydney Water approached Wrought Artworks in 2001 to reproduce one of the Gothic style gates. Using one of the originals gates that line the circular plan of the Reservoir as a pattern, a duplicate was created.
In a heroic cast iron pour we successfully recreated a new 'old' gate. A foundry crew of four pairs were required for this complicated pour, as well as a crew to charge the furnace. The complexity of the mold required four molten iron inlets, the molten metal fusing on contact.
The pour was 3 times larger than any previous using the maximum capacity of two furnaces. This project won Wrought Artworks a commendation in the Energy Australia, National Trust Heritage Awards. Simultanously Wrought Artworks also reproduced some sections of the highly detailed railings from around the parameter of the reservoir.
A documentary titled 'Baking a Gate' by Julia Boros was sceened on the ABC. |
